Botox for sweating – does it really work?

botox treatmentsExcess sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be a very embarrassing and upsetting condition, can affect anyone and usually begins during puberty. In many cases, excessive sweating eases as we reach adulthood, however, if it continues in to our 20s and 30s, it is unlikely to be treated effectively, by normal deodorants or antiperspirants. Hyperhidrosis can affect the underarms, hands, feet, back of the knees, the face and anywhere where there may be a fold or crease in the joints or the skin. At Dr Dan Dhunna’s clinics in London and The Midlands, he treats the symptoms of this sometimes debilitating condition with Botox® injections and results can last up to 6 months at a time. May of our patients who experience excess sweating and whom are having their daily lives affected by this condition come to us for help, and will regularly ask us “does it really work” and the simple answer is “yes!”.

Here’s why…

Botox® is a substance which blocks specific nerve signals to parts of the body. In facial rejuvenation, it causes a ‘disconnect’ in the communication between the nerves and facial muscles that cause expression lines and dynamic wrinkles. In cases of hyperhidrosis, it causes the nerves which control the sweat glands to secrete, temporarily stopping them from producing sweat altogether. Botox® has been approved by the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis and has overtaken many prescribed topical applications, which can make the skin sore and uncomfortable.

Which areas can I have treated with Botox® for my hyperhidrosis?

The FDA has approved that BOTOX® is highly-effective and safe to use for the following areas which experience hyperhidrosis:-

• Underarms
• Hands
• Feet
• Head
• Face

Am I suitable for a Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis with Dr Dan Dhunna?

Most patients who are over the age of 16 can undergo a treatment for hyperhidrosis using Botox®. However, before any treatment can commence, at Dr Dan Dhunna’s clinics in London or the Midlands, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation and skin analysis. If you are under the age of 18 we will ask that you bring a parent or chaperone along with you. Dr Dan Dhunna will discuss what is bothering you about your excessive sweating and where you experience it most. He will then check your medical history to ensure that a treatment using Botox® injections would be safe and suitable for your unique requirements. Every patient is treated as an individual and there may be some reason that Botox® might not be the solution for you. However, in most cases, there is no reason why Botox® cannot be prescribed and the results can be life changing. Once Dr Dan Dhunna and you are happy to proceed with a Botox® treatment to help with your excessive sweating, you can book your appointment. If there is enough time, and your medical history is clear, you may even be able to have the treatment on the same day.

What happens during a treatment using Botox® for hyperhidrosis with Dr Dan Dhunna?

Prior to the treatment, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. A red coloured solution will be applied to the affected areas to show the areas which are most in need of treatment. Once the doctor can see where to place the Botox® injections, he will precicely administer minute quantities of the Botox® solution into the skin, using a needle. This can be a little uncomfortable, so for certain areas, a topical anaesthetic can be applied, beforehand. This can take around 30 minutes to take effect, so consider this when arranging the timings of your Botox® treatmentWhen will I experience the results from my Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis?

You may start to notice a reduction in excessive sweating in around 2 to 4 days, following your Botox® hyperhidrosis treatment. However, most patients will feel the full effects at around 2 weeks. Results can last anything from 6 to 8 months. This is around the time when you will need a repeat treatment, in order to manage your hyperhidrosis symptoms effectively in the long term.

Why have Botox® for hyperhidrosis?

If you are feeling that excessive sweating is affecting your life in a detrimental way. If you have to take changes of clothing with you to work, if it hinders the types of clothing you can wear, if your work, social or romantic life is affected and if you think that people are noticing your hyperhidrosis on a daily basis, this can all have a huge impact on your confidence and a sense of wellbeing. Unlike some shop bought deodorants or lotions on the internet, Botox® injections are clinically-proven to effectively stop excess sweating for months at a time. You don’t have to use anything at home to maintain the effects, just make sure that you are visiting the clinic for your top up treatments, when you feel that the Botox® is no longer working to keep your symptoms at bay (we recommend a visit once every 6 months). Your skin won’t be uncomfortable as it can be with some prescribed, powerful topical medications, which can actually burn the skin and no one will know you have the treatment; as we offer a highly discreet and professional service to all our patients. There is no downtime and you can have this treatment in your lunch hour. There are no side-effects (apart from slight raised bumps in the treatment areas for an hour or so) and the treatment is quick to administer.

Dr Dan Dhunna is highly-experienced in the administration of Botox® for hyperhidrosis and sees on a daily basis, how much of an improvement it can offer to his patients’ quality of life. They no longer have the daily embarrassment of wet underarms or sweaty palms and don’t have to think about what to wear every day or take spare clothing with them, wherever they go.

If you are suffering on a daily basis with the symptoms of excessive sweating, know that you are not alone and that Botox® is a highly-effective treatment that can give you months without having to consider this condition.
